Building work has started on a new primary school in North Lincolnshire.

St Peter and St Paul Church of England Primary is to open on Scunthorpe's new Lakeside housing development by September 2012.

North Lincolnshire Council is working with the Diocese of Lincoln to create the school, which will cater for up to 210 children aged from four to 11.

The school will be built in two phases with the hall, kitchen, offices and main teaching areas completed first.

About 1,000 new homes will eventually be built as part of the Lakeside development.

North Lincolnshire Council said the school would be within walking distance of all the houses.

Councillor Rob Waltham, cabinet member for children's services on the Conservative-led council, said the school would "be at the heart of a new community".

He said: "It has been designed to meet the needs of schooling in the 21st Century and I very much look forward to it opening next September."
