Increase in drivers using mobiles across East Yorkshire

The number of drivers caught using mobile phones has more than doubled in East Yorkshire in the past year.

Humberside Police caught 278 motorists in September using their phones while driving, a rise of more than 130% from the previous year.

Police said the popularity of smart phones and social network sites had contributed to the increase.

Of those who were caught using mobile phones at the wheel in September, 150 chose to attend an awareness course.

Those not choosing to attend the course were issued with a £60 fine and three penalty points on their license.
