Ferry crossings from Hull to Belgium have been cancelled over Christmas due to a lock gate fault.

Sailings were disrupted on Thursday evening after the failure of the lock gate at the city's King George Dock.

The sailing from Hull to Zeebrugge on Friday and the return journey on Christmas Eve have been cancelled and passengers have been contacted and offered alternative arrangements.

P&O Ferries said the situation was "regrettable, but beyond our control".

The fault meant the Pride of York docked late on Thursday evening.

Dock owners Associated British Ports (ABP) said the problem was caused by two metal securing rods shearing off.

ABP said the ferries were using the riverside berth at the dock and they "hoped to have a repair to the lock gate up and running by 28 December".
