Hull pork producer Cranswick report rise in profits

A Hull-based supplier of sausages and bacon to two major supermarkets has reported increased sales.

Cranswick said all its pig products saw improved trading with "particularly strong" demand for bacon and fresh pork.

The company said sales for the quarter to December 31 were up by 10% from the year before.

The figure compares with a growth of 8% in the quarter to September 30 and 5% in the previous period.

Charles Pick, an analyst from Numis, is expecting profits of £42.7m for this year to March 31.

He said: "Pig meat has gained market share from other proteins, especially highly priced beef and lamb. This trend accelerated over the Christmas trading period."
