A 20-year-old man has been arrested after an elderly woman was left with serious head injuries outside her home in Scunthorpe.

The woman was found in a "very fragile state" at West Common Gardens at about 14:45 BST on Tuesday.

She was taken for treatment to Scunthorpe General Hospital where she is in a critical but stable condition.

The man is being questioned in connection with the assault, Humberside Police said.

Det Insp Alan Curtis, leading the investigation, said while the attack was an isolated incident it was "a very nasty assault on a vulnerable woman".

Meanwhile, police have appealed for the drivers of four vehicles believed to have passed the victim's house between 13:30 and 14:30 BST on Tuesday to come forward.

A dark Astra with a silver metallic strip on the boot, a silver Citroen Picasso, a red Citroen C1 and a red Peugeot are all thought to have passed the address between those times.

Detectives want to speak to the motorists as potential witnesses, said Humberside Police.
