A group is trying to raise a £1,000 to build a large figure of Jesus to take part in a pride parade.

The 13ft-high (4m) figure would take part in the UK's national LGBT pride event in Hull in July.

Hull and East Riding LGBT Christian fellowship said the figure they had used previously was not available.

A crowdfunding appeal has been set up and the group said it had also applied for a National Lottery grant.

Challenging stereotypes

Lucy Gorman, from the organisation, said: "The previous one went on someone's shoulders and someone then walks along with it.

"The amount of attention it attracts is unbelievable."

Ms Gorman said it was important to have a Christian presence in the parade.

"A 13ft-Jesus is not something a lot of the LGBT community expect to see," she said.

She added that a Christian presence was also a way of challenging stereotypes of both Christians and the LGBT community.

Hull, which is the UK's city of culture, has been chosen to host the first national LGBT event between 22 and 29 July.

The event marks the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality.
