Kent fire crews warn over risk of chimney fires

Fire crews have warned householders to regularly sweep their chimneys to avoid the risk of fire.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said it had attended 788 chimney fires in the past three years.

It said most fires were started due to the build up of debris in the chimney and could have been avoided.

Stuart Skilton, the head of community fire safety, said: "It is important that the chimney is kept clean and you do not allow soot or ash to build up."
