A pregnant dog has been found in a state of collapse and close to death, sealed in a box in woods in Kent.

The Jack Russell was spotted by a passer-by on Penenden Heath, near Maidstone, with an unborn puppy trapped in her womb, said the RSPCA.

The sick dog was rushed to a vet and an emergency caesarean was performed. The dog, who has been named Daisy, is said to be making a good recovery.

Animal welfare officers described the perpetrator as "unbelievably cruel".
