Thieves have used a mechanical digger to remove a cash machine from a wall in Maidstone.

Kent Police said the raid at 0340 GMT had caused structural damage to the Lloyds TSB branch in Loose Road.

Officers said the digger had been stolen from a nearby building site. The thieves made off in a blue truck along Cripple Street.

No-one was hurt during the raid and no weapons were used.

Officers closed Cripple Street as forensic officers carried out forensic checks.

A resident of the flat above the bank was woken up when the digger tore a hole in her bathroom wall.

Det Sgt Shelley Chantler said: "Members of the public may have been in the area when the theft happened and witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it."

She said the blue pick-up truck had been abandoned on a track near Longend Road in Marden.
