Chatham road closure drivers facing fines

Motorists continuing to use a main road in a Kent town that has been closed have been warned they could be fined.

Globe Lane in Chatham was closed last November to all vehicles, apart from buses, taxis and cycles, as part of regeneration plans for the town.

However, some motorists have been ignoring the closure and continuing to use it as a through road.

Kent Police said they would be carrying out a number of enforcement operations in the area over the coming weeks.

Insp David Godfrey said: 'We are working alongside our partners at Medway Council to ensure that the public using Globe Lane are kept safe.

"It is our job to make sure that traffic enforcements are upheld, and motorists could find themselves facing a fine, points on their licence or a summons to court.'

Regeneration work for Chatham town centre includes opening up the waterfront, remodelling the road system and building a new bus station.
