A man working on a building site close to a primary school in Kent has been killed after a trench collapsed on him.

Police and the air ambulance were called to Bridgefield Road, Whitstable, at 1255 BST but the 24-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating, assisted by Kent Police. Officers have arrested a man on suspicion of corporate manslaughter.

The site, with two houses on, is close to Swalecliffe Primary School.

Parents were asked to collect children at the back gate to prevent any distress.

A spokesman for the Kent Air Ambulance said the man had suffered a cardiac arrest.

A statement on the school's website said: "Due to a serious incident where a man has been involved in an accident, Kemp Road is closed.

"All parents are to collect their children at the end of school from the back gate in Swalecliffe Road.

"No child will be allowed to leave the school unaccompanied."
