Firefighters are still tackling a blaze which has destroyed a garage in north Kent.

Crews were called to a taxi repair workshop in London Road, Swanscombe, near Dartford, at 1730 BST on Friday.

At its height about 70 firefighters dealt with the blaze, which spread to tyres and rubbish behind the building.

Residents were also warned to keep their doors and windows closed and witnesses reported seeing plumes of black smoke from miles away.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said crews started to scale back their efforts just after midnight and were still damping down at midday on Saturday.

No-one was injured in the fire.

A spokesman for the fire service said the cause of the fire was not yet known.
