Sailor swims to safety from stricken yacht near Dover

A yachtsman was taken to hospital after he jumped overboard and swam ashore when he got into difficulties in rough seas off Kent.

Dover Coastguard said the sailor was trying to put up the sails on the 28ft vessel off St Margaret's Cliff near Dover on Wednesday afternoon.

He swam ashore to raise the alarm after the yacht began heading for the rocks.

The man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate by ambulance.

"He is very lucky to have got out of this relatively unscathed," said a coastguard spokesman.

He said it was unlikely to be possible to salvage the yacht, which remained at the base of the cliffs.
