A man who died after being rescued from a fire on a houseboat on the River Medway has been named by Kent Police.

Stephen Harrison, from Maidstone, was removed from the boat and a fire officer tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the boat beside Royal Engineers Way in Maidstone about 0200 BST on Saturday.

Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are working together to try to discover the cause of the blaze.

Fisherman Bob Lowthian said he and Mr Harrison, who was looking after the boat for its owner, had been friends for about a year.

"He was an all right fella," he said.

"He was ex-army. I am ex-army myself and that is how we got to know each other."
