Fire in roof of derelict Chatham church

A fire at a derelict church in Chatham needed 40 firefighters to bring it under control.

The blaze was reported just after 05:30 BST, and six Kent Fire and Rescue Service pumps and a height vehicle were sent to the scene.

The roof of the main clock tower of the church in Dock Road, opposite Fort Amherst was on fire when crews arrived.

The fire was put out just before 08:20 BST, although crews remained at the scene to check for hot spots.

Dock Road in Chatham remains closed. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
