Rochester houses flooded as Southern Water pipe bursts

A burst water main has led to six homes being flooded in Rochester.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service and Southern Water have been called to deal with the flooding in Warren Wood Road and the Tideway.

David Coleshill, a spokesman for Southern Water, said the burst pipe was an 18in (45cm) pump main.

He said one house had to be pumped out by the fire brigade and the others had water going through their houses and into their gardens.

"We've found it's an 18in rising main.

"This is a main that pumps water from one reservoir to another, and that's fractured just above where these houses are.

"So what we've done is we've stopped pumping, we've isolated the main and we're now looking to effect and repair which means digging down, excavating and exposing the pipe and actually mending it."
