Maidstone street reopens after gas leak

A street in Maidstone has reopened following a gas leak which caused residents to be evacuated from their homes.

A gas pipe on a grass verge close to Downs View Road was reported to be ruptured shortly before 11:00 BST.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service evacuated homes within a 150 metre radius of the leak.

A 300 metre cordon was put in place for pedestrians and Sandling Lane was closed at the Running Horse roundabout.

Inspector Jay Allen, from Kent Police, said: "Although the road closures caused some inconvenience, they were all implemented to ensure the safety of the public."
