Kent Police powers to tackle Ashford street drinking

New powers to curb street drinking around a shopping area in Ashford have been introduced.

Kent Police said a dispersal order covering Brookfield Court would run for three months.

Officers said groups of people had been gathering late into the night, revving car engines and letting off fireworks.

Under the order, police can make groups of two or more leave the area and not return for 24 hours.

If they refuse or return within this time they may be arrested and charged.

Offenders can face a fine of up to £2,500 or three months imprisonment.

Ch Insp Julien Lawton said: "It has got to the stage where enough is enough."
