Residents of a Kent town have begun raising funds in support of a baby who is in a critical condition in hospital.

The one-month-old boy from Gravesend was admitted to Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford, on 1 December before being transferred to a London hospital.

A man and a woman arrested on suspicion of assault have been bailed.

Ellie Constantinou, of the Sports Cafe in Gravesend, where a collection for the baby has started, said people had already been very generous.

"They all want to support the baby, and all put their hands in their pocket when they come in," she said.

Two vigils have been held in the town for the injured baby, and a growing number of toys, candles and cards have been left in support of him amid concern for his condition.

Kent Police said the child remained critical but stable in hospital.
