Thanet College plans to open renewable energy centre

Plans to build a centre specialising in the renewable energy sector have been put forward by a Kent college.

Thanet College hopes to open the Centre for Environmental Technologies at its Broadstairs campus in 2013.

The college has secured £2m towards the cost of the project from the government's Skills Funding Agency.

College principal Graham Razey said it would allow people to "take advantage of real employment opportunities within a rapidly growing sector".

In June, the 100-turbine Thanet Offshore wind farm off Thurness Point was completed.

Kent County Council also hopes Sandwich Discovery Park will offer opportunities for hi-tech research and development companies to start up.
