An elderly woman has died and a male neighbour has been taken to hospital after a fire at a house in Kent.

Firefighters called at 09:00 GMT entered the three-storey house in North Road, Hythe, after reports that the woman was trapped inside.

The neighbour, who had attempted to tackle the blaze, was taken to hospital suffering from severe smoke inhalation.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the cause was being investigated but it was not thought to be suspicious.

Spokesman Russell Jordan said the house was heavily smoke logged and very hot when crews arrived.

The fire, in the lounge, was put out quickly but the woman occupier was found to have died.
