Medway Council bids to open engineering college bid

A technical college specialising in construction and engineering is being proposed for Medway.

Medway Council has submitted a bid to the Department for Education to open a University Technical College (UTC).

The Conservative-controlled authority said the facility would offer 14 to 19-year-olds a mixture of vocational and academic training.

The council will work in partnership with the University of Greenwich, Mid Kent College and local businesses.

Practical skills

The idea of UTCs is to give young people practical skills, alongside academic subjects such as maths and English.

The Department for Education is examining the bid. If successful, the college would open in 2013 and provide places for 600 students.

A number of sites in Medway are being considered for the college including an unused block at Brompton Barracks.

Residents can have their say by visiting the council's website.
