Residents have staged a protest opposing the planned closure of an east Kent town's postal delivery office.

Whitstable postal workers were due to strike on Saturday, but the action was called off while talks continued.

Royal Mail wants to shut the Whitstable office, where about 50 workers are based, and move the work to Canterbury.

The Communication Workers Union said it would lead to more traffic on the roads and delays in deliveries reaching Whitstable.

Local people formed a picket line outside the delivery office on Saturday.

Resident Julie Wassmer, who is co-ordinating the campaign, said: "It's clear we will face a worse service if the move goes ahead - particularly our elderly, our infirm and those on low incomes who will be hit hardest with a 16-mile round trip to Canterbury to pick up their undelivered mail."
