Police investigating the murder of a schoolgirl in Kent more than 20 years ago have been searching the former home of a man convicted of attempted murder.

Claire Tiltman was stabbed more than 40 times in an alleyway off London Road, in Greenhithe, four days after her 16th birthday on 19 January 1993.

No-one has ever been charged with the Dartford Grammar School pupil's murder.

The house in Myrtle Place, Stone, near Dartford, used to be the home of Colin Ash-Smith, who was jailed in 1997.

He is serving three life sentences for attacks on women, including the stabbing of 22-year-old Charlotte Barnard in October 1995, just yards from the alleyway where Claire was murdered.

Mr Ash-Smith's father, Aubrey Ash-Smith, lives in the property and told BBC South East that his son was innocent and police officers had searched the property on two previous occasions.

The Kent and Essex serious crime directorate cold case investigation team said it was standard practice that undetected murders were reviewed regularly, and the search was part of that ongoing review.

Both of Claire's parents have died without seeing her killer caught.

Her father, Cliff, died last September and her mother Lin died in 2008.

Claire, known to her friends as Tilt, was stabbed as she took a shortcut to visit a friend.
