Sussex pensioners donate £24,000 of their fuel allowance

Pensioners in Sussex donated £24,000 of their heating allowance to charity over the course of the winter.

The Sussex Community Foundation said it collected money from wealthier pensioners who felt they did not need the money.

The charity then redistributed the cash through other charities, including Age UK, to help elderly and vulnerable people heat their homes.

Pensioners receive between £100-£300 in allowance from the government.

Most payments are made automatically if a person receives a state pension and was born on or before 5 January 1952.
