The former boss of Kent's Manston Airport has been announced as the new chief executive of nearby Lydd Airport.

Lydd said Charles Buchanan had already started work on the airport's £25m redevelopment plans to extend the runway and build a new terminal block.

Mr Buchanan was chief executive of Manston Airport, about 40 miles from Lydd, for four years until it closed.

Lydd wants to take up to 500,000 passengers a year once the development has been completed.

Mr Buchanan said: "I've joined Lydd at a very exciting time and I'm now working with the rest of the senior management team and staff to bring the airport's development plans to fruition.

"I relish the opportunity of growing Lydd's role and importance in the local economy as it develops into a first-class modern regional airport, creating employment opportunities and delivering lasting benefits for the people of Shepway and Kent."
