A prisoner who was allegedly punched by another inmate at a prison has died.

A spokeswoman for the Prison Service said Fraser Stent, 28, died in hospital on 19 October, a week after the alleged incident at HMP Rochester.

Kent Police said they were called to the jail on 12 October where a 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault. He was bailed until February.

He was later returned to prison, and inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the incident.

The Prison Service spokeswoman added: "As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."
