Lottery cash to protect Darent Valley landscape

A £2.1m lottery grant has been earmarked to protect a Kent landscape.

The Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty said the funds were to protect chalk grassland and historic parkland in the Darent Valley.

The area was strongly associated with Victorian landscape artist Samuel Palmer, director Nick Johannsen said.

Mr Johannsen said Palmer once described the area as an "earthly paradise" but London's rapid expansion had brought the capital to the brink of the valley.

He said the cash would ensure the landscape remained understood, valued and cared for, for generations to come.
