An ex-Gillingham footballer has been cleared of raping a woman he had met in nightclub who then went home with another man.

A jury at Maidstone Crown Court had heard Nathan Nyafli went to a flat where the woman was staying and assaulted her while she slept.

The 21-year-old, of Tollgate Way, Sandling, Maidstone, denied rape, claiming it was consensual sex.

He told the court the woman was awake, recognised him and agreed to sex.

Mr Nyafli was in tears, with his head in his hands, as the jury's verdict was delivered at the end of the six-day trial.

According to Gillingham FC's website, Mr Nyafli played for the team in 2013 but retired from football in February 2014 because of an injury.
