A man has been arrested after images of a gun and a knife were posted on the social media page of an MP, days after Labour MP Jo Cox died after being shot and stabbed in her constituency.

The symbols were posted on the Facebook page of the Conservative MP for South Thanet, Craig Mackinlay.

The post on 18 June was prefaced with the message: "Another MP that needs..."

Kent Police said a 28-year-old man had been arrested and was in police custody.

The force said inquiries continued into the report of threatening or offensive communications.

Mrs Cox, 41, the Batley and Spen MP, died after being shot and stabbed in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Thousands of people took part in memorial events around the world on Thursday to celebrate her life on what would have been her 42nd birthday.
