A 73-year-old man has died nearly a week after he was injured in a car crash in Blackpool.

Alan Weightman, from Blackpool, was driving with his wife along Midgeland Road when their silver Rover collided with another in Progress Way.

He was taken to hospital with multiple injuries after the crash, which happened at 1315 BST on 21 October, but died on Wednesday night.

His 70-year-old wife remains in a poorly but stable condition.

Mr Weightman's family said in a statement: "Our family are devastated by the sudden loss of such a wonderful father and grandfather.

"Our thoughts are with his wife Glenda, who has lost a loving husband."

Witness appeal

The driver of the other car was arrested but released on bail.

Lancashire Police said the 26-year-old woman, who was driving a grey Seat Altea, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact police.

Sgt Pete Beresford, senior investigating officer from Blackpool road policing unit, said: "I would continue to appeal for any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police to get in touch.

"I am particularly interested to speak with anyone that witnessed the Seat Altea travelling along Progress Way prior to the collision."
