Canal used to tackle warehouse blaze in Lancashire

More than 80 firefighters have been tackling a blaze that has destroyed a warehouse on an industrial estate in Lancashire.

Crews pumped water from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to control the fire which broke out on New Lane, Burscough at 2000 GMT on Tuesday.

Twelve nearby homes and the Farmers Arms pub were evacuated overnight.

The fire service's major incident support unit and 15 appliances attended the scene.

The fire service said that asbestos was found in the roof of the building, but reassured neighbours that it was not harmful.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
