Blackpool is set to receive a huge boost in tourism by hosting the television show Strictly Come Dancing, the council has said.

The contest is being broadcast from the resort's Tower Ballroom later for a third time.

Councillor Maxine Callow said: "It sends out a message that Blackpool is a great town to come to for holidays or to come and invest in.

"It has put a lot of confidence back in the town."

The show was broadcast from the famous ballroom last November but the council said there had been noticeable changes since then.

The local authority bought the tower earlier this year and Merlin Entertainments has taken over running it.

It is currently undergoing a £5m refurbishment, including replacing the ballroom roof. The tower summit is currently closed.
