Thieves steal empty cash machine from Lancaster store

Thieves stole a cash machine from a supermarket in Lancashire, only to discover there was no cash inside.

The gang struck at Booths supermarket in Hala Road, Lancaster at about 2325 GMT on Sunday.

They smashed the glass around the machine before attaching a rope to it, pulling it from the frame.

The machine was taken away in a white transit van and other offenders left the scene in a hatchback vehicle, a Lancashire Police spokeswoman said.

Det Sgt Colin Forsyth said: "This offence shows some degree of planning and determination and the offenders were clearly intent on getting away with this cash machine; unfortunately for them, it didn't contain any money at the time.

"We would appeal for any witnesses who saw any suspicious activity or similar vehicles in the area around the time of the offence, or anybody who has information regarding this incident, to contact police."
