Woman struck by car in Chorley dies

A woman has died after she was hit by a car in Lancashire.

The 62-year-old was walking along Bengal Street in Chorley, just after 1700 GMT on Wednesday, when she was struck by a Peugeot 106 car.

The woman, who was from the town, was taken to Chorley Hospital where she died a short time later.

A 20-year-old man from Chorley has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail pending further enquiries.

The male driver was treated for shock and the female passenger was treated for head and facial injuries, including a broken nose.

Lancashire Police said the road was closed for about four hours to allow accident investigation to take place.

Sgt Dave Hogarth said: "A full investigation into the cause of the collision is now under way and I would appeal to anybody who may have witnessed it to contact police."
