Moor fire in Rivington Lancashire

More than 50 firefighters have been tackling a moorland blaze covering three square kilometres in Lancashire.

Crews have used beaters and an all-terrain vehicle to damp down the flames at Winter Hill near Rivington.

The blaze by Belmont Road broke out at 1330 GMT and has been contained but not extinguished, the fire service said.

The operation has been stopped overnight because of crew safety fears and one engine has remained at the scene to prevent flames spreading.

The fire service said that crews will return to the blaze if necessary at first light on Saturday.
