Moorland fires out on ninth day but Belmont blazes on

Moorland fires which burnt for nine days at Ormskirk and Darwen in Lancashire have been extinguished, the fire service said.

A fire at Belmont near Bolton, which began on 29 April is continuing to burn and is being tackled by firefighters using five engines.

Crews were withdrawn from the Ormskirk and Darwen sites at about 1200 BST.

A fire service spokesman said the Belmont fire near Pike Road still represnted a "significant challenge".
