Investigation after abandoned baby report in Edenfield

Detectives are interviewing a woman believed to have reported having abandoned a newborn baby.

Police were told a girl had given birth and left the baby wrapped in a blanket in a bag near Owd Betts in Rochdale Road, Edenfield, on Tuesday night.

Officers found the green Wilkinson bag, with human blood inside, along with a white knitted blanket and a purple size 12 female top.

Doctors are checking to see if the woman has given birth.

Supt Steve Pemberton had urged the girl to contact police, saying his main concern was for her welfare.

A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said: "Police have now traced a woman who they strongly believe to be the female involved in this incident.

"She is in her late 20s and is from the Whitefield area of Bury.

"Officers are currently speaking with her to try and establish the facts and her medical welfare is being assessed."
