Off-duty soldier stabbed in chest in Blackpool alley

An off-duty soldier has been stabbed while on a night out in Blackpool.

The 21-year-old, based at Weeton Barracks, Preston, was stabbed in the chest at 0400 BST in an alley between Talbot Road and St John's Square.

Paramedics were called to a takeaway shop near Syndicate nightclub on Church Street, where the soldier had managed to walk to after being stabbed.

He was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he underwent surgery. He is in a serious but stable condition.

Police have so far been unable to speak to him about the attack.

Det Insp Kevin Simmons, from Lancashire Police, said: "An investigation is under way and we are working hard to establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened.

"We have recovered CCTV footage which continues to be viewed but I would appeal to anyone who was in Blackpool town centre in the early hours of this morning that saw anything suspicious or indeed anybody that thinks they may have witnessed the incident itself or a precursor to it to come forward and contact police."
