Lead stolen from Skelmersdale primary school roof

Thieves have stolen lead from the roof of a primary school which caters for children with learning difficulties.

They targeted Elm Tree Community Primary School in Skelmersdale, Lancashire over the weekend, head teacher Dave Lamb said.

He estimated that repairs would cost about £24,000.

The school had to be closed on Thursday after a temporary repair was damaged by rain, due to health and safety concerns, he said.

The thieves have caused "enormous upset and inconvenience" to the children and parents, Mr Lamb said.

"My staff and I are working around the clock to make the school safe and to reopen as soon as possible."

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said officers were investigating the theft.
