Preston Cemetery's open day invite

The people of Preston have been given a chance to explore the city's main cemetery.

The attractions include a new tree walk as well as the traditional tour of the historic and important burial sites.

Preston Council said the tree walk enables people to discover what trees are planted in the cemetery and where they came from.

The history walk includes the graves of Victoria Cross winner Pte William Young and Thomas Duckett, Sculptor.

'More interest'

Free refreshments will be available throughout the day and there will also be information about the cemetery and crematorium services and facilities.

Councillor Robert Boswell, cabinet member for community and environment, said: "The open day is always a popular event amongst local people who are keen to learn more about local history.

"With the addition of the tree walk this year we expect there will be even more interest in the event.

"It is a great opportunity to get out, enjoy the walk, meet new people and learn about the history of the cemetery."

Tours run from 1100 BST to 1400 BST.
