Sledgehammer gang attack security guards in Whitworth

Masked men armed with sledgehammers attacked two security guards who were filling a cash machine in Lancashire.

The three men attacked the guards at the Co-Op in Whitworth at about 1300 BST on Thursday.

One guard was hit over the head and cash was stolen from him before his colleague was forced to hand over more money from inside the security van.

Both were wearing helmets and not seriously hurt, but were taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

The men left the scene in a black Renault Megane which was found abandoned on nearby Daniel Street.

Witnesses said the men then got into in a black BMW three series which set off towards Bacup.

There were also a number of staff and customers in the shop at the time of the robbery but nobody was injured.

The men were all wearing black and grey tracksuits, balaclavas and gloves.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
