Metal thieves cut electric supply in Blackpool

Hundreds of homes were plunged into darkness when thieves smashed through a sub-station wall trying to steal live electricity cables in Lancashire.

An Electricity North West spokesman said the thieves risked death in the raid on the sub-station in Blackpool.

The power supplier said 361 customers lost their supply from 2000 BST on Saturday to 0100 on Sunday.

Thieves escaped with some metal but caused thousands of pounds worth of damage, said Electricity North West.

Electricity North West Response Manager, Jane Fleetwood, said: "This crime has caused hundreds of customers to lose their electricity supply, caused thousands of pounds of damage and could have been fatal for the vandals themselves.

"It is incredibly stupid to try and steal live electricity cables."
