Lancashire Police warning over conmen on doorstep

Police in Lancashire have warned residents to be on their guard for conmen knocking on doors in the county.

The men pretend to be from United Utilities or other utility companies and claim there has been an explosion.

They then tell people they need to go into their house to check the water supply. Once inside they steal money and leave.

Jan Brown, crime prevention officer for Lancaster police, urged people to question cold callers.

"You must be asking for identification," she said.

"If someone is genuine they will give you that identification.

"If they then ask to provide you with a contact number please do not use any contact numbers that are provided to you... because it may well be it is an accomplice's number that they are providing you with."
