Blackburn's Roman Road library offered to community groups

A Lancashire council is looking for community groups to take over the running of a library.

Blackburn with Darwen Council plans to create "gateway libraries" starting with Blackburn's Roman Road library.

The changes came about because of cuts of £513,000 (25%) from its library service over two years.

Under proposed changes the number of books could be limited, and management of the building and facilities would be transferred to a community group.

The council anticipated it would cost about £25,000 to run Roman Road library under the changes.

Councillor Damien Talbot said: "At the public consultation, the community sent a clear message that they wanted to retain library provision in the existing building, but were quite supportive and interested in looking at options for shared usage."
