Man tries to abduct 12-year-old girl in Skelmersdale

A man tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl as she played with her friends on a street in west Lancashire.

The girl was on Feltons in Skelmersdale at 20:30 BST on Thursday when the man approached her and grabbed hold of her.

She screamed and broke free before the man ran off towards Birch Green Road. The girl was unhurt.

Lancashire police said the man, who is about 40 and 6ft (1.8m) tall, was seen loitering in a wooded area next to Feltons before the incident.

He had dark sideburns and grey stubble and was wearing dark tracksuit bottoms and a red baseball cap.

Police are urging anyone who saw him or witnessed anything suspicious to contact them.

Det Insp Graham Coates from Skelmersdale CID said: "This is a serious incident which thankfully is incredibly rare but we need the public's help to catch the man responsible.

"I would like to reassure the local community that we have a team of detectives investigating this incident and extra patrols have been deployed to the area.

"I would urge parents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. Should any resident have any concerns they can contact us or speak to their local officer."
