HMP Preston officers in court over death of inmate

Two prison officers charged following the death of a 36-year-old inmate at a Lancashire jail have appeared at Preston Magistrates' Court.

Christopher Oldham was found hanging in his cell in HMP Preston on 21 April. He was on remand after being accused of perverting the course of justice.

Shaun Percy, 49, of Walton-le-Dale, has been charged with misconduct in a public office.

His wife Lisa, 49, has been charged with perverting the course of justice.

They were given unconditional bail until their trial at Preston Crown Court on 6 March.

Mr Percy is alleged to have failed to carry out mandatory cell checks on prisoners who were assessed as feeling suicidal, the Crown Prosecution Service has said.

It is also alleged that he falsely recorded that he had carried out these checks.

Mrs Percy is accused of making entries in her husband's name falsely recording that he made two further checks on Mr Oldham.
