A memorial service for the Indian student who was killed in a shooting on Boxing Day has taken place at his former university.

Anuj Bidve was studying engineering at Lancaster University when he was killed in the attack in Salford.

Staff and students from the institution came together to remember the 23-year-old.

Engineering professor Andrew Richardson said those who knew him would "greatly miss Anuj".

He said that Mr Bidve had been "looking forward to the next stage of his studies".

"Anuj was a pleasure to teach," he said.

"His enthusiasm and attention to detail was part of what makes teaching in a university environment such a pleasurable experience.

"My academic colleagues and fellow PhD students will greatly miss Anuj. My heart goes out to his family and friends."

Mr Bidve was on a visit to Manchester with a group of university friends when he was shot in the head at close range on 26 December as he walked along Ordsall Lane.

Kiaran Stapleton, 20, of Ordsall, has been charged with his murder. He is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court in March.
