Small explosive device found in street in Nelson, Lancashire

A home-made explosive device found in a street in Lancashire had the potential to cause "significant damage or serious injury", police have said.

Officers were called to Pinfold Place in Nelson at about 20:10 GMT on Wednesday after residents reported hearing a loud bang.

In the street they found the remains of what is believed to be a small explosive device.

Det Supt Neil Hunt said it was "extremely fortunate" no-one was hurt.

He said: "We are now trying to establish who is responsible for making this device and leaving it in the street.

"If this was a prank I would urge the person responsible to come forward."
