Doubt over Skelmersdale Sports Centre future

The future of Skelmersdale sports centre is in doubt because of serious problems with the building.

West Lancashire Council faces a repair bill of nearly £250,000 for the former factory which was converted into a sports centre in the 1970s.

The roof, which leaks regularly, needs to be replaced as it beyond repair, an assessment has found.

The heating system, showers and lighting also need repairs. The council is consulting with local groups.

Councillor David Sudworth, the council's portfolio holder for leisure, said: "The building has developed serious defects and the time is now right to look at its long-term future."
